Ushigome Kagurazaka (牛込神楽坂). Woodblock. 1939. TSUCHIYA, Koitsu (土屋光逸; 1970 – 1949). 6park.comTsuchiya is known as a lyrical landscape painter who skillfully manipulates light and shadow, distance and nearness. This is a work that clearly shows the characteristics of Koitsu. Ushigome Kagurazaka is near present-day Kagurazaka, Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo (東京都新宿区神楽坂). As a famous place in the Edo period, it often appears in nishiki-e paintings (錦絵) from the mid of that period. 6park.comThe print depicts a scene where women with umbrellas come and go down a long narrow alley wet with rain. The lanterns of Doi (土井) kappo (割烹) restaurant and the light inside the restaurant reflect on the rain-filled water surface, creating a soft glow that spreads around you, giving you a sense of the emotional sexiness of Tokyo at night and a nostalgic feeling. The atmosphere is similar to the print Araki Yokocho at Yotsuya (四ツ谷荒木横町) by Tsuchiya Koitsu too. The same street was depicted by Noel Nouet, providing a nice way to compare the latter’s unique pencil style with the more mainstream style of Tsuchiya Koitsu. 6park.com | |||
