Lee: Coast Guard's role increasingly important amid N.K. threats, sovereignty spats SEOUL, Sept. 24 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak said Monday the role of South Korea's Coast Guard is becoming increasingly important amid threats of maritime provocations from North Korea and sovereignty spats in Northeast Asian waters. www.6park.com
   Lee made the remark during a ceremony in Busan marking the 59th anniversary of the Coast Guard's founding right after the Korean War ended in 1953, saying "threats to our waters have been increasing day by day." www.6park.com
   "We can never let our guard down even for a moment as North Korea continues to threaten maritime provocations and tensions in Northeast Asian waters are escalating," Lee said in the speech at a Coast Guard pier in Busan. www.6park.com
   The remark was in reference to tensions over Japan's claims to South Korea's easternmost islets of Dokdo, and a spat between China and Japan over a group of islets in the South China Sea, known as Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan. www.6park.com
   Lee said he felt reassured to see the resolute determination that members of the Coast Guard showed toward defending Dokdo when he made an unprecedented visit to the East Sea islets last month. www.6park.com
   Lee also said the government has been strengthening the patrolling of waters around Dokdo and Ieodo, a submerged rock outcrop lying within the overlapping exclusive economic zones of South Korea and China off the southern island of Jeju. www.6park.com
   After the ceremony, the Coast Guard commissioned a new 3,000-ton class ship that will be in charge of guarding South Korea's exclusive economic zone off Jeju.
