Damien Hirst's Spot Paintings Recreated With M&Ms
By now you've probably heard about contemporary artist Damien Hirst's exhibition called The Complete Spot Paintings, which opened in January 2012 at all 11 Gagosian galleries across the world including locations in New York, London, Los Angeles and Rome. (You can read about it over at the LA Times.) Over the course of twenty-five years, Hirst has painted tiny spots in unrepeated colors on about 1,500 blank canvases.
As Hirst said, "I was always a colorist, I’ve always had a phenomenal love of color… I mean, I just move color around on its own. So that’s where the spot paintings came from—to create that structure to do those…

Chinese artist Qian Yi has composed these intriguing illustrations by combining elements of digital painting with more traditional styles. Many of them incorporate a sense of adventure with the traveling boy series of works. Yi is able to incorporate all kinds of color palettes and perspectives to effectively portray the message of the pieces. Preview Amy Sol's Dreamy New Works
We were granted special access to preview Amy Sol's dreamy new works that will go on display at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City, California starting March 10, 2012. Called Numina, the major exhibition will feature ten new acrylic-on-wood panel paintings with Sol's signature soft colors and dreamy settings. "The characters in each piece are participants seeped in adventure and dream logic," she told the gallery. “In a way, I feel I have tapped in to a primitive creative energy that first compelled me to paint when I was a child. Exploration is the primary goal of each piece, with composition and palette guided by intuition and instinct,” Sol says. The opening reception for Numina takes place on Saturday, March 10 and all are welcome. The exhibition will be on view through March 28, 2012. Don't her paintings make you feel like…

Beautiful Blurring Lines Between Human Nature
Artist Rico Blanco combines his two passions—painting and illustration—into these magnificent abstract-like pieces. The main focus of each painting, often building on a relationship between human and animal, creates a scene that evokes different meanings and narratives. Experiencing each piece is like trying to hold on to a brief flash of memory right before it disintegrates into the swell of colorful paint strokes. The conflict between a sense of completion and the fragmented narrative is intentional. Blanco says, “The picture is built up in layers and I choose when and where to add detail and where to leave areas more sparse. I want to show the progression of the painting. Which leaves you with the challenge of when is the painting finished?” In my opinion, the paintings are fantastic!…

Movement and Explosions by Scott Belcastro
While we're used to seeing Scott Belcastro's beautifully whimsical paintings, we were delighted to find out that he's turned a slightly darker corner with his new works. Opening February 24 at Iam8bit Gallery in Los Angeles isBrighter Doom, a solo exhibition that, according to the gallery, explores "the vivacity and chaos pulsating through all entities, whether natural or man-made, while simultaneously addressing the beautiful tragedy that is life."
Using acrylic paint on wood panels, he's both simulating movement and showing us explosions that seem to be traveling across. "For this show I wanted to capture an imaginary essence or spirit that moves with things, whether it be a gun, an animal, or a…

Bold Breaking Waves by Maggi Hambling
Maggi Hambling bring forth the energy and power of waves through her beautiful oil paintings. The sea has become an obsession for Hambling who starts each day with a ritual. "Early each morning I go down to the sea and try to capture its mood by drawing, and each day is different. Back in the studio, these drawings become paintings. Whether they are tiny or cover the studio wall, I try to make the movement of the waves happen in the paint." "The older I get I identify with the land which is being eroded," she said. "The sea is like time - you can do nothing about it. Death will come, the sea will come. It's a metaphor for life." Love how she, unapologetically, uses such bold paint strokes to create the tumultuous waves.…

Remarkable Oil Paintings Made with Rippling Drops
At first glance, from a distance, I thought I was looking at an image that incorporated a form of Pointillism. Upon closer inspection, it became clear that artist Matthew Davis' paintings display more than just a multitude of dots. The works require far more attention and patience to construct. (Keep in mind: Pointillism is not quick and easy.) Davis' time-consuming, yet effective technique involves dripping drops of oil paints in layers. Between each layer, the artist waits for the paints to fully dry. The amount of time spent waiting for each layer to dry coupled with the time and precision to create the rippling swarm of circles in each image is incredible. On top of all of that, Davis utilizes a wide range of colors you wouldn't think to include and it works brilliantly! A blue pool of…

Pretty Underwater Photos Look like Watercolor Paintings
While we're use to seeing paintings that look like pictures (photo-realism), it's not often we come across photos that look like paintings. Toronto-based, self-taught photographer Barabara Cole (who we first wrote about here) is a master at achieving this effect. Her Chromatics series tests the nature of photography and its impact on our experiences of reality by making her underwater figures look abstract or amorphous. (Yes, that's an actual person lurking under the water.)

Rich Watercolor Paintings
I stumbled onto the work of Anders Romare and was immediately taken aback by his rich watercolor paintings. Romare has the ability to create wonderfully crafted stories that seem to pop off the screen. Always filled with an air of mystery, these stunning pieces of urban-themed art make watercolor feel fresh and current. Romare received his Masters of Fine Art at The Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, Sweden. He's currently represented by Galleri Thomas Wallner. Anders Romare's…

Dripping and Splattering Watercolor Paintings
British artist Dave White has a signature style that involves an explosive application of drips and splats of paint. Often referred to as the UK's Andy Warhol, White recently showed off a new body of work in London for his Western-inspired show Americana. As part of that series, White created watercolor on paper works that are reminiscent of some of the first pieces he debuted over 20 years ago. These are said to be just as dynamic, but more powerful. In a recent interview with Ralph Lauren Magazine, he explains what's new and different. "Something I’m doing with the animal works and the Native American portraits, especially the…

René Magritte's Entire Body of Work
If you're a fan of Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte, you're going to want to make your way to Vienna from now till February 26, 2012. The Albertina museum is currently presenting an exhibition, called "René Magritte. The Pleasure Principle," as a tribute to the great artist. About 150 paintings and paper-based works will be shown as well as original writings, photos and film material. What makes this exhibition so special is that everyone from museums of modern art to private collectors have come together to lend their works to this grand retrospective, enabling the Albertina to present every single one of Magritte's pieces. You'll be able to see how the green apple, the pipe, and the man with the bowler hat are all elements that Magritte repeatedly used in his paintings. They not only bring continuity to his work, they've become his lasting…

New Watercolor Paintings of a Heartbroken King Kong
Yesterday, Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York debuted an exhibition of nine new, large-scale watercolor paintings by artist Walton Ford. Viewed for the first time, these monumental works of art include three startling portraits of King Kong, the character based on the 1933 hit movie. The artist wanted to show a different side of the giant ape, one that showed his vulnerability and sad emotions.
As Ford explains to the gallery, “The depression era Kong was misshapen, not modeled on any living ape. He has an odd, ugly, shifting charisma like Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, or Bogart. Naturally, his woman screamed in terror. She continued screaming throughout their time together. The grief of the original Kong is the grief of the unloved, and like Humbert Humbert or Frankenstein, the grief of the unlovable. In 1933, Fay Wray says words that would break any…

Eric Zener's New Photorealistic Underwater Paintings
When we first came across artist Eric Zener's underwater paintings back in July 2009, we said that they made us "remember what it feels like to be immersed in cool, clear water. That moment when the world's worries wash away and a sense of calmness overtakes your body."
Zener's back with a fantastic new body of work that he's debuting at Gallery Henoch in New York City starting tomorrow, October 20 and through November 12, 2011. Called Swimmers, Nature & Sleep, the exhibition will include 10 new works from his prominently reviewed Water series. Here's a sneak peek at what you can expect to find.

Andy Kehoe's Magical Nighttime Paintings
If you're looking to get into the Halloween spirit, love the spookiness of nighttime, or just have a strange fascination with monsters, then you're going to enjoy artist Andy Kehoe's new show coming to the Roq la Rue gallery in Seattle, Washington on October 14th. A few pieces have been released on various websites which will give you a taste of what's to come. The show is called Arise, Feral Night and it's centered around the magic and mystery of night. The exciting new show promises to open an "even deeper portal" to Kehoe's fascinating world.

Amazing Multi-Layered Sculptures
Michael Murphy challenges the boundaries between the second and third dimensions in his art. What appears to be a painting is, in fact, a series of dissected layers, forming a figure when viewed from the right angle. His series,LOOK, forces the viewer to move around and observe each comprehensive piece from different perspectives.
In addition to the optical illusions he creates, Murphy works in a variety of mediums that include multi-layered sculptures, nail portraits, wire sculptures, sound installations, and shadow portraits. If you're in New York, you can view LOOK at Gallery Nine5 which is currently on exhibit until October 6, 2011.…
