Breaking: The State Dept is now requiring all Chinese diplomats to notify the US government before visiting any federal, state or local government officials, academic or research institutions. This is to protest restrictions on US diplomats in China.
A senior administration official said the goal is not to restrict Chinese diplomats' movements, but "to basically add a little bit of reciprocity into the way U.S. diplomats are treated in China as opposed to how Chinese diplomats are treated in the USA.”
“In China, our diplomats are forced to seek permission and are frequently denied permission," to take basic meetings, the official said. Years of efforts to persuade Beijing to change its behavior have failed.
